Came across this video from the British Museum whilst pottering about on the internet. It's reignited my interest in looking at jewellery from the past and working out how it was made.
I often think about the sheer scale of work that went into producing the gorgeous, opulent jewellery of the past and my mind just boggles.
Mining the ore then transporting the metal from the mine to wherever it needed to go (without any modern technology or transportation!) would have been an immense task! Then of course there's the metalwork itself...
And the cost of it all must have been astounding. The materials and the workmanship, the hours of labour... I'd love to make a gigantic 24K gold torc right now, but sadly I am not a Celtic king of old, and my bank account says NO.
However, I am tempted to reproduce some of my favourite Viking finger-rings... we shall see!
